Fall 2024 edition of SOAR Magazine by Robeson Community College
Hot off the press! Robeson Community College has published its Fall 2024 edition of SOAR magazine, a publication that is student focused, featuring success stories and student work. “We are so excited to release our second edition of SOAR magazine,” stated RCC President Melissa Singler. “This is the time that many will make the decision to attend Robeson Community College in the fall to pursue their dreams exploring a myriad of possibilities and this magazine just may be the inspiration that someone needs to take that first step in becoming a student." The first edition features three sisters who graduated together and earned the associate degree of nursing, an early college graduate who has received $100,000 in scholarships to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the winner of the 2024 NCCCS Academic Excellence Award and includes recipes from culinary arts, original works of poetry, and the complete 2024 Fall Curriculum schedule. "Robeson Community College continues to be a beacon of hope, from our early college to CCP classes to short-term training that is available for those seeking to retool and retrain," Singler said. "Amazing things are happening at Robeson Community College. This is the time, this is the place to build better skills, a better job, and a better future." MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It’s summertime at Robeson Community College, and what an amazing time this is. 吀栀is is the time that many will decide to attend Robeson Community College in the Fall to pursue their dreams of becoming a nurse, an electrician, an accountant, a teacher or exploring a myriad of other endless possibilities. And, it’s the time that we see so many new faces come through our doors to register, take campus tours, and are excited about what their future holds. Education changes lives, and it can change yours. THE 2024 GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE VIEWING PARTY AT ROBESON COMMUNITY COLLEGE RCC students, faculty, and sta昀昀 had a chance to witness a rare moment in history as the Great American Eclipse made its way from Texas to Maine. Although RCC was not in the path of totality, hundreds lined up to see the partial eclipse as the moon passed by the sun on April 8, 2024. One couple stopped o昀昀 I-95 to fuel up, saw the watch party on our sign, and decided to check it out, as did many locals. Solar sunglasses were provided, and a telescope was available for viewing. RCC’s Science faculty hosted the event, with Astronomy Instructor David Gavasci on hand to answer questions. 吀栀e event garnered media attention from WBTW, WPDE, WMBF, and the Robesonian, and RCC even got streamed live by CBS across all a昀케liates as they covered the event from coast to coast. Nine students completed the program – Rohon Atkins, Tyquayle Gause, Benjamin Harris, Christopher Hunt, Kaleb Jameson, #9 Donell McKeithan, Todd McQueen, Larry Tatum, and Quentina Zeigler. 9 - The RCC Culinary Arts Department wins the People’s Choice Award for its “Dr. Pepper Chili” in March during the Rumba at the Lumber Festival. 10 - Twelve employees at Elkay Manufacturing Company in Lumberton recently completed the Forklift Training, Train-the-Trainer Operator course offered through Robeson Community College’s customized training division. Adam Smith, Nyesha Shand, Rose Locklear, Susanne Council, Joseph Cobb, Barbara Scott, Daeshawn Jones, Twyla Sampson, John Gary, Tyrone McLean, James Locklear and Daniel Manning completed the training. 11/12 -The Lumberton Rotary Club and Duke Energy presented of昀椀cials at RCC with a check for $4000. The money will be used to provide $2000 in scholarships and $2000 in Grinding Equipment for the welding department. Breane Hill, Kiale Rogers, Andon Revels, and Justin Hyatt, all welding students, received a $500 scholarship. 13 - RCC hosted FAFSA Day in January and had the second-highest attendance ranking across the state, with 108 students checking in during the event. Wake Tech in Raleigh came in 昀椀rst place with 135 students attending and #10 NC State placed 3rd with 103. Central Piedmont in Charlotte came in 4th with 92 students. 15
