La creciente aceptación política del pronombre They/ elles La vacilación generalizada de los gramáticos a la hora de acep- tar el singular They no es compartida por muchos de sus co- legas académicos que han investigado el uso y su distribución (por ejemplo, Bodine 1075; Whitley 1978; Jochnowitz 1982; Abbot 1984; Wales 1984b). Ni tampoco los hablantes nativos del inglés estándar, que muestran una preferencia abrumadora por él en el inglés hablado contemporáneo. Este pronombre está cada vez más presente en el inglés escrito no formal y adquiere una difusión cada vez mayor de los registros escritos no formales. Desde el periodismo a la administración y pa- sando por la escritura académica, el singular they, de hecho, ha estado bien establecido en el uso informal; hasta que los gramáticos prescriptivos decretaron que era gramaticalmen- te ‘incorrecto’, y así lo proscribieron, efectivamente, del dis- curso escrito (público). El OED de Jespersen (1914) revela, por ejemplo, que justo desde el momento de la introducción de los pronombres indefinidos en el idioma en su forma actual en el periodo del inglés medio tardío, la opción que implica they ha sido de uso común”. Cambridge University Press, 1996) Inluso, en enero de 2016, la American Dialect Society eligió el singular de género neutro they como su Palabra del Año: “They fue reconocida por la sociedad por su uso emergente como pronombre para referirse a una persona conocida, a me- nudo como una elección consciente de una persona que recha- za el binario de género tradicional de él y ella” (comunicado de prensa de la American Dialect Society, 8 de enero de 2016).
