Chair’s Message On October 4, 2022, we celebrated the grand opening of our new HSHPE building. Joined by a crowd of supporters, dignitaries, staff, volunteers and Board of Directors, the opening marked the culmination of a long-held dream to provide the best home for animals in need. The new Animal Care and Community Education Centre allows HSHPE to provide the highest standard of animal care, and to offer animal care and community programs. Many generous supporters contributed to the new site. The Cities of Belleville and Quinte West, TaskForce Engineering Inc., along with generous companies who donated money, services and goods to help with the build. A compassionate and caring community contributed substantial financial donations to our It Takes Heart Capital Campaign. 2022 has brought us not only many successes, but also challenges. Sadly, we have seen an increase in animal surrenders as a result of post-pandemic return to work and cost of living increases, which have created financial strain for many families. A shortage of veterinarians and rising veterinary costs have further contributed to the inability of some pet owners to continue to care for family pets. As the Board looks ahead, it is clear that the growing and increasingly diverse population will mean more pets and pet owners needing support, education and services, while access to pet food banks and affordable veterinary care will enable owners to continue to care for their pets. As I complete my term as Chair, my deepest appreciation goes to Marilyn Lawrie, our Executive Director, the staff, Board of Directors, and our many donors and volunteers for their support and dedication. We are indeed “Connected by Compassion”. 7
Executive Director’s Message 2022 was a monumental year in the history of Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward. Our new facility at 34 Wallbridge-Loyalist Road was ready for the animals in mid-September. This long-awaited shelter was designed with animal care and safety in mind, right down to the paint colours. The public was eager to see our new ‘forever home’ and we experienced record numbers of visitors as well as volunteer applications. Our community room hosted visits from young and young-at-heart groups who toured our building and learned about the animals in our care. This bright space, with adjoining kitchen, will host HSHPE programming and is available for members of the public to rent. My ongoing thanks to the dedicated, professionally-trained and compassionate staff team. Supporting them is our force of volunteers, who perform animal care, dog walking, laundry/ dishwashing duties and event support. Our volunteer Board members, led by fearless leader Donna Endicott, serve the organization at the governance and strategic planning level. You are all the backbone of the HSHPE and we absolutely could not do what we do without you. As for the generosity of the public, I continue to be amazed with your ongoing contributions of financial and in-kind donations to support the animals in our care and our new facility. My thanks to all for making my job exciting, invigorating and most certainly, never boring! 8

Rescue Readers Program Launched in August, this innovative program aims to increase knowledge of animal care, shelters and the lives of pets in our community, and supports the development of literacy skills for young readers. Centred around a visit to HSHPE, students are taken on a tour of the Animal Care and Community Education Centre and have the chance to view adoptable animals, and learn more about our facility. After the tour, students are divided into small groups or pairs and stationed in different areas where they are encouraged to read to cats, dogs, rabbits, rats and other small animals. The visit may be supported by pre and/or post-visit learning activities. HSHPE has been able to welcome over 300 students to date in this program. A New Website As part of our rebranding process, HSHPE initiated a complete redesign of its website and lauched it at a new url: humanesocietyhpe.ca. The new site, designed by They Integrated Inc., allows HSHPE to more fully tell the stories of the animals who find themselves in our care, our volunteers, supporters and programs, as well as our support for animal owners in the region through pet care information and advice. The Store at HSHPE The Store at HSHPE opened in December, offering new pet items generously gifted by local pet stores and community supporters, as well as a selection of work by local artisans and our own branded merchandise. The Store is staffed by volunteers, with all pr ofits going toward the operation of the shelter and the wellbeing of animals in our care. 11

Keyda’s Story Keyda shortly Keyda, a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever cross, after arrival was surrendered to Humane Society Hastings at HSHPE. Prince Edward by her owner in the fall of 2021. We knew right away that she was in rough shape. Her skin was dry and flaky and she had lost much of her fur. She had wounds and lumps on her skin. She was underweight and her eyes were cloudy with green discharge. She had tartar build up and tooth decay. Her bloodwork results showed she had Lyme disease and a severe flea allergy. With the help of Loyalist Veterinary Hospital and the support of our donors, she was treated for fleas, internal parasites, Lyme disease and skin, ear and eye infections. She had surgery to remove a lump and two decayed teeth. She was vaccinated against kennel cough, rabies and was microchipped. Throughout her ordeal, Keyda was a brave dog. She was shy and withdrawn and clearly in pain, but always kind and gentle. As she began to recover, we decided she might do well in a loving foster home. Luckily for Keyda, Doris and Ron Koomen had completed our foster care training and were ready to foster their first dog. “I think we fell in love right off the bat,” recalls Doris. “She [Keyda] was just so sweet. I loved her so much, but I think somehow Ron loved her even more.” In June of 2022, Ron and Doris soon decided to welcome Keyda into their home on a permanent basis. Keyda is now 11-years-old and doing well. Doris says she loves that Keyda is a senior dog, and her calmness and energy level are a perfect match for them. The Koomens are just two of the many people who open their hearts to surrendered animals every year, offering Keyda at home today. them new hope and new homes. 18
