Dialogue Teacher: Good morning class. Today we have a new student who joins the classes, his name is Samuel Katia: Hi Samuel! , you will be the only man in class, we are all girls. Marlen: Yes Samuel, you will be the only man Samuel: No girls, I’m not male Fer: Oh please! , we’re seeing you, you’re a man Samuel: No girls, look, I will explain. I am non-binary. Girls: non-binary! What is that? Samuel: A non-binary person is one who does not fully identify with a gender. Katia: That’s not possible, we all have a gender. Samuel: Yes, but some people don’t feel good to be called a man or a woman. Fer: Then as we say to you “he” “she” Marlen: This is very rare, I just feel comfortable being “she” Samuel: I prefer to be referred to as “they” Katia: Why? Samuel: ´Cause it’s a rule on how to refer to people like me Samuel: Non-binary, or gender non-binary, refers to a person whose sense of self is not exclusively woman/female or man/male.
