Sizing the Need and Opportunity The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that between 2012 and 2022, 1.3 million jobs will need to be filled for computer occupations and information systems managers, but the clear message from the private sector is that without serious growth in the number of people with information technology (IT) 54 skills, it is unlikely that American workers will meet that demand. Recent analysis from CEB gives a more detailed understanding of metro area labor markets, providing information on supply and demand of talent for specific IT skills. In Philadelphia, for example, in 2013 there were 12,000 IT job opportunities that went unfilled due to a lack of available talent. A closer, skill- level analysis reveals a need for nearly 1,000 developers proficient in Java and 1,110 who possess .NET skills. IT jobs offer opportunity for American workers across the country. After California, states with the largest number of IT job opportunities include Texas, Georgia, and Illinois. Recent data on the IT job market show that Pennsylvania, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Alabama had the highest demand for IT workers relative to supply. In 2007, 52 percent of software job postings were clustered in just 10 metropolitan areas nationwide, but by 2012 that number had dropped to 45 percent, due largely to demand expanding throughout the Source: CEB country.
