DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Dear future students of Denmark Road Sixth Form Welcome to our school and we hope your school of choice for the next chapter of your education. We are looking forward to showing you all the amazing opportunities we have to offer. Tell our students about your interests and they will be able to speak with you about how you may pursue these at Denmark Road Sixth Form. We have asked some Sixth Form students to share their profiles with you, just to give you a flavour of what life is like here at Denmark Road High School, the school where you will discover who you are as an individual and realise your personal best. Mr Justin Yau Mrs Vicki Mannion Assistant Headteacher KS5 Head of Sixth Form
DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Mei Year 13 Having spent nearly seven years at Denmark Road High School I have so many fond memories, particularly as being in the Sixth Form has brought more independence and opportunities. I have especially loved taking part in House events such as House Dance as there is a great team bond across the year groups and a fun, competitive atmosphere plus they offer a chance to go off timetable and show our skills in other areas. I have loved my time at this school and would not change any of it as it has helped shape me into who I am today. Currently I am studying for five A Levels; Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. As there isn’t enough space on my timetable for everything I have chosen to teach myself the Physics A Level syllabus. Some of my friends think I’m crazy but I love all my subjects and know my teachers and family will support me to help me achieve my goals. I particularly love Further Maths as it challenges my thinking and the Maths department are great. I’m looking forward to starting my next education experience by studying Aerospace Engineering at either Birmingham or Bristol University. Having balance in life is important to me so alongside my A Levels I make sure I have time to work as a lifeguard as this helps me build skills in a workplace but also earn some money to enjoy myself plus I play piano competitively and enjoy cooking for my family. A key thing I have learnt at school is that it is really important to talk to as many people as you can, whether they be your peers or adults or younger students. It’s how you build confidence, make connections and make friends.
DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Tash Year 13 Denmark Road has supported my academic and personal development since year 7 to align with and facilitate my future aspirations. I currently study A- Levels in Economics, Maths, and Biology with the hope to study economics next year at university. What stands out to me is the sense of community that develops within the year groups and between students and staff. This has always provided an encouraging learning environment where peer support is a fundamental part of our studies, super-curricular exploration, and applications. Personally, the opportunities provided from the start of year 7 to build confidence and communication skills through group projects and class presentations have been the most significant and I now have the ‘futures’ role on our student leadership team. This has involved speaking to parents and prospective students, teachers, and the senior leadership team to offer support and ensure that student voice is heard with the aim of creating a dynamic and diverse school environment. Our recent in engagement in the BOOST program has also begun to create an inter-year group support network for the new year 7 cohort. Coming into year 13, I’ve had guidance from my tutor, teachers and the sixth form team in finalising my UCAS options and personal statement. This was coupled by the comprehensive ‘edge’ programme in year 12 within which I entered various essay competitions, attended university outreach events both in person and online, and explored my subject through books and digital courses. Fully engaging with the opportunities presented, as well as seeking out my own by participating the Sutton Trust, ‘Apply: Cambridge’ and ‘Uniq’ programs created a foundation for my UCAS application. Being surrounded by driven, supportive peers and continuous opportunities for exploration throughout my Denmark Road journey has given me a foundation of discipline, motivation, and skills on which to build my further education and future career.
DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Sam Year 12 The Physics course is great here as it covers gravitational fields, astrophysics and cosmology. These are some of my key interests and I would like to follow a career in Aerospace Engineering or Astrophysics following a degree apprenticeship. An opportunity I really appreciate at Denmark Road Sixth Form is getting to have PE with the entire Sixth Form at the same time. We also have a Mixed football team so I am enjoying playing in a team at school and experiencing mixed football. Teachers encourage us to have balance in our lives and this helps me to keep up my interests in rugby and going to the gym. Plus the usuals of playing Xbox games and seeing my friends! If anyone’s thinking of joining Denmark Road Sixth Form I’d advise them to go for it!
DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Amina Year 13 I love the environment here - everyone is friendly and approachable, and the atmosphere is so welcoming. You can always ask someone from your class for help, even if you aren’t necessarily friends. The teachers are also amazing and always ready to help you understand and achieve your best. Denmark Road had countless opportunities for me to participate in. Some that I have most valued were the Step-Up programme with Oxford, the Work Experience week at the end of Year 10 and 12, and the UCAS fair in March of Y12. Additionally, there are lots of clubs to run and get involved in, so there’s always something for you to be doing! Currently I am part of the STEM Club, the Senior Team and I write pieces for the school Newsletter and in the future I would like to be a doctor. I love how the school is so encouraging and supportive, everyone is always ready to help and allow you to maximise your potential. If I could go back in time and speak to my Year 7 self I would tell myself not to stress! Everything will work out in the end - Year 7 is a time to enjoy everything! You’ll be in Year 13 before you know it, so make the most of it.
DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Tofunmi Year 13 Denmark Road High School is diverse, reflective and supportive. Some of my favourite experiences in my time here have been the fundraisers and charity events that both staff and students put on. We regularly have jumble sales in aid of relevant causes such as the Children in Gaza Crisis Appeal, helping us to; clear out things we don’t need any more, actively be more sustainable and focus on how we can support those in crisis across the world. Plus they’re fun events and there’s always a real buzz amongst everyone as they buy and sell in the hall. My teachers have encouraged us to discover our own interests and take time for us, away from our studies. We are not set homework over half terms and holidays and this helps to get some balance in what can sometimes be a stressful time. I can use this time to focus on my other interests such as media – particularly film and television – and enjoy relaxing with my friends. I’ve learnt that the years go by really quickly so it is important to value your time and the process you take to get somewhere. It doesn’t seem long ago that I was with the rest of Bearland House as we cheered for them winning House Music in my first Year at DRHS - it’s such a clear memory of how I felt a part of the Bearland team - and now I am considering my future options and what I’d like to do as a career once I leave! Currently I think I’d love to study at a university and then work in domestic or foreign intelligence as I think that would be fascinating and relevant to my favourite subjects of History and Politics. Though I don’t know exactly what the future holds I am sure that the friends I have made at DRHS will be there to support each other for a long time to come.
DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Abdul Year 12 I came to Denmark Road because the course content was really clear and I was able to choose options to suit me. Even though I was new to the school, I’ve found that it’s really easy to get along with everyone and all students want to do well. This makes working together easier as we all share a common goal. The shared and independent study spaces have been really helpful, particularly when meeting a deadline, as I have dedicated space to work in. I have a great relationship with all my teachers and it’s easy to communicate outside of lessons. All students in the Sixth Form have PE at the same time so it gives us great opportunities to get to know others in the Sixth Form and enjoy both playing sports for fun and playing competitively. Changing schools to join Denmark Road Sixth Form has shown me that change can be good, you will overcome any worries and difficulties and the school helps you learn to be much more independent.
DENMARK ROAD SIXTH FORM Harry Year 12 My favourite subject that I study here is Business and I hope to go on to study a degree apprenticeship with a bank in London in the future. I also really enjoy sport and being part of the Mixed Football Team is good fun. Outside of school I like to go to the gym - we also get time to do this on our Sixth Form PE day - and spend time with my friends or go for walks. Joining Denmark Road Sixth Form has shown me that there are lots of new, friendly people to meet. There is a relaxed atmosphere here as well all know everyone is committed to studying independently in order to succeed.
