Quantity Calculation and Cost Estimation Process Quantity calculations or take off and cost estimates are the last steps of a fully-packaged road design report. This Chapter discusses suggested practices and methodologies in calculating the necessary quantities of the designed elements of a particular road section. These quantities are the basis of scope of work that will be contracted out to winning bidders. The costs of placing these quantities are estimated by the implementing agency to arrive at the total budget for the project, which is referred to as the Approved Budget for the Contract (ABC). Bidders will submit proposal to implement the road project based on the Quantity calculation with corresponding unit cost per unit of measure but not to exceed the ABC published by the implementing agency. The process of quantity calculations and cost estimates is shown in Figure 5.1. Once the road design has been completed, the road design elements are translated into drawings. The speciifcations for construction are followed for each of the road design elements. The cost of each quantities necessary for the work items are estimated in terms of material, equipment and workforce. The cost of putting in place the materials, use of equipment and deployment of the workforce are then computed to complete each work items. Figure 5.1 Quantity Calculation and Cost Estimation Process
